Me, I’m a Creator

Via The Artful Writer I stumbled across what may be the “latest and greatest” explanation/exploration of the nightmare struggles of filmmakers content distributors/creators today. Or what I like to call “the sublime crises”.

Here’s an excerpt from Barrett Garese on the state of things-to-come:

…content is changing in a big way. Big changes to established industries are both painful to the aforementioned established companies, and an opportunity to the more nimble. Business models will change drastically over the next few years to compensate and remain relevant, but when everyone is comfortable there’s no room or interest in changes.

Right now, entertainment is in a low-to-mid-level state of chaos. There’s little confidence in the status-quo, and unlike past decades no one seems to know what the future will bring. This means that those who are willing to experiment will have first opportunity to rewrite the rules. Those who are content to live with the status quo will be replaced. This is equally true across the entire scale of entertainment, from large to small. We’re well placed in a disrupted field, and that presents unprecedented opportunities…

It’s a bit of a long read but it’s worth it check it out here.

It gives strong words to what I believe and William Goldman said so long ago,

“Nobody knows anything.”

So write/produce/own your work, keep costs down… rinse and repeat.

Or in the words of my current music-artist-crush-inspiration and Brooklyn neighbor Santigold:

Me, I’m a Creator
Thrill is to make it up
The rules I break got me a place
Up on the radar
Me, I’m a Taker
Know what the stakes are
Can’t roll it back, it’s understood
Got to play our cards
